Cherryville Mayor H. L. Bean announces he will not seek another term

Mayor H. L. Bean announced during the City of Cherryville council meeting that he will not seek another term in the November 2025 election. "After countless prayers, consultations with my medical team, and with many discussions with my immediate family members, I had made the decision to not seek another term as mayor of this great city," Bean said.
The announcement came amid the mayor's regular remarks updating the council and public on completed and upcoming projects. Bean listed recent developments including the Calico Creek subdivision off Freeway Road, a scheduled ribbon-cutting, and the Larry and Carolyn Sumner Recreation Complex, which Bean said cost $1,813,121. He told the council the city’s share of the recreation complex was $163,121 and that an interlocal agreement included $150,000 from the Piedmont Lithium Community Development Account.
Bean also noted staff changes: wastewater superintendent Larry Wright retired effective Dec. 31, 2024, and Chris Hedick was promoted to superintendent as of January 2025. During the meeting the council presented a five-year service certificate to Colby Hefner, who thanked the council briefly.
Bean thanked current and past council members and city staff and said he has "no regrets" about his time in office. The mayor did not announce an immediate resignation; he framed the decision as not seeking re-election in November.
The council conducted the rest of its agenda after the mayor’s remarks, with no further formal action tied to the mayor’s announcement.
