Summary
After a brief public hearing and no public speakers, Rowan County commissioners approved naming a driveway/street 'Misery Way' in the 1300 block of Rockwell Road; the name was the third family submission and was approved by GIS and 911.
The Rowan County Board of Commissioners approved March 3 the naming of a driveway/street in the 1300 block of Rockwell Road as “Misery Way.”
Planning staff said the family requesting addresses submitted three name choices; two were disallowed by county rules and the third—Misery Way—was approved by GIS and 911 as the third choice. Staff said signs and public notices were posted and that one neighbor had expressed concerns about right-of-way but staff reported the family agreed to follow the existing easement rather than use the neighbor’s driveway.
Planning staff opened a public hearing on the proposed street name and, with no members of the public speaking, the board closed the hearing and voted to approve the name by voice vote.
At the meeting planning staff noted the property is enrolled in present-use-value (agricultural) tax status and that Rockwell had rescinded its zoning over a portion of the tract earlier this year to allow Rowan County to assume zoning jurisdiction. The name selection was described as a routine addressing process handled by GIS and emergency-services addressing rules.
The board’s action was limited to approving the submitted name for addressing and did not change ownership, zoning, or right-of-way. Planning staff said the driveway will follow the recorded easement and that addressing and 9-1-1 notification procedures will be completed.
