School board renews Tallahassee Classical charter for five years despite transportation and financial caveats

The Leon County School Board voted to renew the charter for Tallahassee Classical School for five years, effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2030, after a review that found the school met or approached most evaluation standards but did not meet the transportation requirement.

Lisa Urban, the district’s charter school liaison, told the board the renewal application and attachments totaled close to 300 pages and that the renewal committee conducted a site visit, reviewed the application across roughly two dozen sections and completed a formal evaluation instrument. Urban said the committee recommended the five‑year renewal.

Urban and other district staff told the board the renewal committee’s evaluation showed the school met the majority of standards, with transportation identified as the lone area “not meeting the standard” and the school’s financial status characterized as “approaches the standard.” Board members discussed the school’s reported plans to enter a management or support arrangement with education management organizations (named during the meeting as prospective partners) and said the board’s contract will initially be with Tallahassee Classical’s corporate entity; any future management agreement would be provided to the district and could prompt a contract amendment.

Pam Griggs, identified as a governing‑board representative for the school, and school leaders were present in the room and answered staff questions during the site‑visit summary. The renewal committee said it considered instructional, governance, operational and financial evidence before recommending renewal.

Board members debated the merits of renewal and the district’s legal and oversight posture. During final action the board approved the five‑year renewal; the meeting record shows the vote recorded as 4 in favor and 1 opposed (Board member Daryl Jones indicated the lone opposition when the clerk later recorded the vote). The board instruction will be to execute the standard charter agreement with Tallahassee Classical; if and when a management company formally assumes operational or fiduciary responsibilities the district will require documentation and may amend the charter contract to reflect that relationship.

District staff and board members asked for follow‑up information including copies of any finalized management agreements, details about transportation planning and demographic breakdowns of the school’s staff. The district said it will provide those details to board members on request.
