The council on Monday authorized the interim city manager to execute a purchase agreement with Musco Sports Lighting LLC for LED field lighting at five fields at the Burton Boulevard Soccer Complex.
Staff said the project evolved from earlier proposals for a single championship turf field. After community feedback and cost analysis, staff recommended lighting five fields instead of installing turf; staff estimated a 20-year lifecycle for LED lighting with lower maintenance compared with turf replacement cycles. Funding includes a 2023 state legislative allocation of $750,000 and $1,050,000 expected from LTGO bonds; staff said the state funds must be spent by June 2025.
Resolution No. 4574 authorizes the purchase agreement and installation of lighting at a total planned cost of approximately $1,800,000. Council approved the resolution unanimously on a motion by Mayor Pro Tem Milne, seconded by Councilmember Blaisdell.
Staff said timely approval is necessary to secure equipment and coordinate installation timelines with other regional projects. Council discussion focused on cost comparisons between turf and lighting, lifecycle maintenance and community use; staff emphasized that lighting expands usable hours and meets community demand for more field time.
