Gulf County School Board honors employees, acknowledges audit and approves consent items

The Gulf County School Board on Feb. 4 in Port St. Joe recognized district award winners, approved routine consent matters and acknowledged the districtaudit for the year ending June 30, 2024.
The board presented Gulf County Teacher of the Year to Ashton Lovejoy and named Deborah Barnes the district employee of the year. "It's such an honor to work for the Gulf County School District," Ashton Lovejoy said, thanking colleagues and administrators. Deborah Barnes told the board, "Thank you all for everything and being there for me anytime I need anything." The board also recognized Ruby Williams, a Port St. Joe High School junior, as the districtSunshine State Scholar nominee. Williams read from her essay, saying, "My true desire is to help children recuperate from illnesses by one day becoming a pediatric nurse." The district said the student will attend an awards weekend in Orlando and may meet state education officials and representatives of Florida colleges.
On routine business, the board voted to adopt the meeting agenda as amended and approved consent items, including personnel recommendations and substitute-teacher approvals. The board approved a specific consent item (page 4.01), described in the agenda as a hospital/homebound matter for Wewaubee/Wibaugh High School (as noted in the agenda packet). Board member Gainer moved the motion on page 4.01; Board member Terry seconded, and the motion passed. The board also acknowledged receipt of the fiscal-year audit for the year ending June 30, 2024; the acknowledgement was approved on a separate vote seconded by board member Gaynor.
Administrators provided a brief superintendentreport in Superintendent Nortons absence. The assistant superintendent for business, speaking in Nortons stead, said the district is working on insurance claims and property and casualty insurance renewal and that a school calendar meeting will be scheduled soon. The assistant superintendent also said a request for proposals (RFP) for school food service will be advertised starting Feb. 13 for three weeks, with presentations to follow.
Board members also noted the public availability of a resignation letter from board member Denny McGaughn; the district directed interested applicants to apply through the governor's appointment website. The board mentioned that school board attorney Charles Colston was out of town and did not attend the meeting.
