Pipestone County approves road purchases, sets crushing bid opening and roadside hearing

Highway Engineer Nick Bergman told the board he researched aggregate tax practices in other counties and recommended purchase decisions intended to keep county crews working with dependable materials and equipment. Commissioners approved a crack-sealant purchase, a Trimble GPS equipment buy, a bid-opening date for crushing, and set the road-and-bridge hearing date.
Bergman said the crack-sealant offerings on the bid sheet included both boxed material and a newer meltable/multi-package product and that boxed material is “quite a bit cheaper.” He recommended the county buy boxed material while noting only one supplier still offers it. The board approved a purchase from Midstates for crack sealant in the amount of $24,525.00 after discussion of material handling and comparative pricing.
On equipment, Bergman said the county needs to replace some Trimble-brand GPS receivers so new units will be compatible with the county’s existing system. He told commissioners the data collectors still in use should last “a couple, you know, 2, 3 years” and recommended buying only the receivers now. The board approved the Trimble GPS purchase for $62,515.20.
Bergman also proposed opening bids for a crushing project on March 11 at 10:30 a.m., saying he wants to crush enough to hold a two-year supply and thus reduce mobilization costs by crushing every other year. The board approved setting the March 11 bid-opening date.
Finally, commissioners set the county road-and-bridge hearing for Monday, March 3 at 9:00 a.m., tentatively at the EMS building pending confirmation of that room’s availability.
