County reappoints veterans services officer and OKs architectural contract for HHS remodel

Facility remodel: The board then considered an architectural agreement with Ben Vedder Johnson Architects, Inc. for design services related to a remodel of the St. Peter Health & Human Services building (Veterans Services Office and first/second floor public health areas). The project is included in the county’s 2025–2029 capital improvement plan and carries a 2024-based estimate of $500,000. The county budgeted reserves to cover architectural services and early design work; the cost of architectural design services in the contract is $57,000.
Staff said the remodel will address safety and security concerns, create additional private discussion space, add a third office in the veteran services office, add a dedicated lobby and an exit from the office, and make minor changes to break rooms and public health areas. On the second floor the work will create three multifunctional meeting spaces and seven offices and will address federal tax information (FTI) area requirements. Integrity Group Incorporated was named as the construction manager; construction was described as expected to begin in spring 2025 and last “a couple of months.”
Operational impact: County staff said some employees will be temporarily displaced within the same building during the work; three veteran services officers will be relocated to other space in the building and veterans will be notified of any temporary changes to service locations. County staff said they are exploring additional space in North Mankato to help accommodate staff during the remodel.
Board action: Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the reappointment resolution and the AIA B132‑2019 agreement with the architect by voice vote/roll call as recorded in the meeting.
