Fairview approves storybook trail at Bowie Nature Park; staff outlines playground repairs and maintenance plan

The Fairview Board of Commissioners voted unanimously March 6 to approve a resolution authorizing a storybook trail at Bowie Nature Park and discussed ongoing playground maintenance and warranty work at the park.
Parks staff described the storybook trail as 10-to-20 signposts placed along an existing trail behind the nature center, each sign sized about 24 by 32 inches and mounted roughly 18 inches above the ground for children to read as they walk. Parks staff said the city is asking the public to pick the first book to be posted and hopes to complete the installation by summer 2025.
"A storybook trail is put along an existing trail within a park. There will be signs' 10 to 20 signposts with 24 by 32 inches signs, displaying pages of a storybook along the trail," Parks Director Keith Paisley said while outlining the plan. Staff said the initial budget estimate is $5,000 for installation, and the department requested an additional $5,000 for maintenance and for interchanging stories over time.
Commissioners also raised concerns about recent reports of soft spots in the park's play surface and other warranty issues. Paisley said much of that work is already in progress: the city has ordered rubberized mulch, replaced four of six required parts on play equipment, greased and inspected the merry-go-round, and replaced plexiglass on slides. Paisley said the city is working with the original vendor and a new territory representative after the vendor changed staff.
On the zip-line element, Paisley said the department plans to remove that piece and is pursuing replacement components to fill the fall zone. He also confirmed the playground receives an annual certified inspection and that the department will continue to schedule regular inspections and maintenance.
Commissioners said they wanted the repairs prioritized before warmer weather and more frequent park use. "We've ordered the mulch'they're the ones that ordered it. And that so that's the rubberized mulch in the soft spots... We have ordered one more mallet. We have replaced four out of the six," Paisley told the board.
The storybook trail resolution passed 4-0; staff said they have potential sponsors and aim to have the trail installed by summer 2025.
