Board discusses proposed 2025–26 calendar, consolidation of early-dismissal days

District administrators reviewed proposed changes to the 2025–26 school-year calendar, telling the board they removed two early-dismissal days and consolidated other early-dismissal requirements to reduce the number of separate half days for staff and students.

The administration said two contractual early-dismissal days for K–8 and preschool that previously occurred four separate times will be combined into two occasions next year to meet contractual obligations while reducing the number of shortened days. Administrators also described a pair of discretionary early-dismissal days (for example the day before the NJEA teachers’ convention and the day before spring break) that are not contractual and were retained after a district survey of neighboring Monmouth County districts indicated the early dismissals support staff attendance at area events.

Administrators said the calendar remains tentative to accommodate possible snow dates and power outages; they said two buildings that experienced a power outage will need to make up one day, which will be reflected in a revised calendar to be returned to the board in April. The board asked for clarification on whether last-day-of-school differences and graduation timing could be revisited once the weather window has passed.

Trustees raised concerns about the hardship early-dismissal days create for working parents and asked for clarity on which half days are contractual and which are at administrators’ discretion. The administration repeated that the most significant changes are the elimination of two early-dismissal days and the consolidation of others, and said it will bring a revised calendar back to the board in April for finalization.
