Summary
Ordinance 25-002, requiring state-approved alcohol server training for employees at licensed establishments, passed on third and final reading after council discussion of who and when the training applies.
Riverton City Council adopted Ordinance 25-002 on March 4, requiring all employees who serve alcoholic beverages at licensed establishments to complete a state-approved alcohol server training program.
Administrative Services Director Mia Harris said the proposal grew from an industry informational meeting and local prevention partners; draft language requires new hires to complete training within three months and requires annual proof of training at license renewal. Harris told the council many license holders already require server training and the ordinance would standardize that requirement across the city.
Council members asked whether temporary or off-site permit holders, such as fair vendors with a malt beverage permit, would be covered. The staff response was that off-site premise permits would be treated as licensed activity and that many fair employees already had TIPs training.
Councilman Mike Bailey moved to adopt Ordinance 25-002 on third and final reading; the council approved the ordinance by roll call vote with all members recorded present voting aye.
The ordinance adds Section 5.04.06 (Alcohol Server Certification) to Riverton Municipal Code, specifying certification maintenance and documentation requirements. City staff said two TIPs trainings had been scheduled in the community and that the requirement would standardize practices already used by many establishments.
