Acting principal highlights Strathmore Elementary’s student leadership, social-emotional programs

Acting principal Stephanie presented Strathmore Elementary’s academic and social-emotional initiatives, student leadership programs and recognition of students and staff during the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District meeting.
Stephanie, acting principal of Strathmore Elementary School, told the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District board that she has been at Strathmore just under two months and praised the school’s staff, students and families for a welcoming transition. “It is my pleasure to stand here as acting principal and share with you some of the wonderful things happening here in our school,” she said.
The principal described efforts to foster student leadership and social-emotional learning (SEL). She said the school’s safety patrol has 20 members who assist with arrival and dismissal and monitor bus lines, and that under faculty oversight students raise and lower the flag each day. She noted enrichment classes taught by staff including Ebersol and Luke Webster that offer arts and STEM activities and highlighted a peer-buddy program that pairs 52 third graders with students in self-contained special-education classes.
Stephanie also described schoolwide SEL routines led by counselor Connolly and recognized more than 35 students through a monthly character-education program; the February spotlight recognized Zaria Frobozo, a second grader, for perseverance. The presentation closed with a preview of a third-grade concert directed by Ebersol and an invitation for families to continue participating in school events.
Strathmore’s presentation also included staff recognitions: Cauleen Burden was named educator of the year and Christine Fry was named educational services professional of the year. The principal described staff breakfasts and other gestures of appreciation that she said contribute to the school’s community culture.
Board members and district staff heard about the school’s emphasis on inclusion, with small-group instruction, peer collaboration, and differentiated activities intended to meet a range of learning needs. The acting principal said staff use classroom lessons and routines to reinforce SEL skills such as resilience, empathy and communication.
The report ended with an invitation to families to visit Strathmore events and a reminder of upcoming student performances and community activities.
