FC Middle School now fully accredited; principal outlines attendance, behavior and enrichment efforts

FC Middle School is fully accredited for the 2024–25 school year after improvements in academic achievement and chronic absenteeism, Principal Tatum told the Henry County Public Schools board during an informational presentation.
The school moved from an earlier status of “accredited with conditions” to full accreditation, Tatum said, and reported Level 1 performance across English, math and science achievement measures. She noted remaining work in special education math and English services.
Tatum highlighted a combination of strategies she said are supporting student success: Virginia Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS) for targeted instruction, Freestyle Fridays and pep rallies to boost school climate, and VIP recognition for students who maintain behavior points. The principal presented charts showing attendance trends; recent dips were attributed to flu and respiratory illnesses, and staff are continuing attendance-improvement efforts.
Behavior data showed reductions in several serious incidents — including tobacco and illegal drug possession, threats and physical altercations without injury — while other areas had increased and remain targets for improvement, Tatum said. To foster relationships and engagement she described the Cavalier Connections Block, a 45-minute, teacher-led interest-club period that gives students recurring opportunities to join clubs such as guitar, cheer/pep-rally and walking clubs.
Tatum also described Saturday Academy, which the school uses to address COVID-related learning gaps and to provide additional English immersion for English learners. The principal said students who attend Saturday sessions earn field-trip incentives; recent examples referenced included visits to the North Carolina Zoo and planned recreational outings.
Board members thanked Tatum for the presentation and congratulated staff; a board member specifically congratulated the principal on achieving full accreditation. The presentation closed with an invitation for board members to ask questions and to visit the school.
