Manhasset students earn national recognition: Chloe Yang places second in STN; Phoenix magazine wins national awards

McGowan described the entry and the competition, saying the Student Television Network received a record 866 entries this year and praising Chloe’s storytelling and artistry.
The board also heard from The Phoenix co-moderators, Candace Kennedy and Mr. Novak, who presented awards for the district’s art and literature magazine. Kennedy said The Phoenix covers grades 7–12 and noted the magazine has a tradition at Manhasset dating back to the 1960s. She described a memorial contest established in 2015 in honor of a former student, Carrie Sitt, whose family funds recurring cash prizes for contest winners.
Kennedy said the 2024 issue included more than 20 writers and 22 artists and won what she called “the NCTE Realm Award,” which she identified as a national honor. She also said the magazine received first prize with special merit from the American Scholastic Association and called those national recognitions that include feedback to help improve the publication.
The board applauded Chloe and the magazine staff; one board member invited the students and families to linger for the budget presentation or to leave early if they preferred. Co-moderators recognized this year’s student editors (Remy Wang, Leila Altamura and Jocelyn Lou) and listed a group of students who contributed to last year’s award-winning issue.
Ending: The board formally recognized the student winners and magazine staff during the meeting’s awards segment and moved on to the budget hearing that followed.
