The Newport News City Council voted 7-0 at its Feb. 11 work session to enter a closed meeting to discuss prospective business locations and to consult with legal counsel on specific legal matters.
Councilman Long moved that, "pursuant to section 2.2 tech 3 7 1 1 a of the code of Virginia 19 50 as amended, precept section 5 a, the council hold a closed meeting for the purpose of discussion concerning prospective business or industry or the expansion of existing business or industry where no previous announcement has been made of the business or industry interest in locating and expanding its facility in the community," with the subject described as prospective new business in the central section of the city. The motion also included consultation with legal counsel regarding specific legal matters involving immigration law. A second was stated and the clerk called the roll. The roll call recorded 'yes' votes from Councilman Ealy, Councilman Harris, Mayor Jones, Councilman Long, Councilwoman Vick, Vice Mayor Bethany and Councilman Coleman. The clerk announced, "Motion carried. 7 0."
The council moved into the closed session immediately following the roll call; no substantive details of the closed-session discussion were disclosed in the public record at the work session.
