Dev Rossell, chair of the Planning Commission, told the council the commission reviewed seven special-use permits over the year — four in January–March (all short-term rentals) and three in July–August (one short-term rental plus a storage use and a small Salamander Resort expansion). Rossell said most short-term rentals were in the Salamander area and one was on Route 50.
Why it matters: The commission’s recommendations affect land use, visitor accommodations and commercial/residential zoning that shape development pressures and neighborhood impacts.
Rossell said the commission advanced three zoning text amendments, including an R-2 development amendment (reviewed jointly with council in May), an amendment clarifying the bed-and-breakfast family definition and residential uses in commercial districts, and a clarification distinguishing retail banking from private-wealth-management uses. She also described two commission appointments approved by council to fill vacancies after resignations.
Looking ahead, Rossell said the commission intends to begin a chapter-by-chapter review of the 2019 comprehensive plan and asked the council for direction about the commission’s role in the town’s upcoming strategic-priority work and retreat. She said two newly appointed commissioners will attend a certified planning commission program this month.
