The Newport News City Council voted unanimously on Feb. 11 to permit Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany to participate in the work session remotely under the city’s updated electronic participation procedure because a family medical condition requires he provide care.
"As a reminder to city council, we updated our procedure for our electronic participation. So I'm seeking a motion to allow vice mayor Curtis Bethany to participate in this meeting from a remote location through electronic communication means as a medical condition of member's family requires he provides care, preventing his attendance," the mayor said before a motion was made and seconded. The roll call recorded 'yes' votes from Councilman Ealy, Councilman Harris, Mayor Jones, Councilman Long, Councilwoman Vick, Vice Mayor Bethany and Councilman Coleman. The clerk announced, "Motion carried 7 0."
Council did not attach conditions to the remote participation during the work session; the council cited the recently updated city electronic-participation procedure as the authorization for the accommodation.
