Newport News schools report 287-student drop; division outlines academic roadmap to boost accreditation

The enrollment figures include about 19,000 students in general education programs, roughly 3,600 students receiving special education services and a little over 2,500 English-language learners, according to the superintendent. Division staff said the decline reflects multiple factors, including local economic shifts, housing changes and a modest decline in military-connected families.
