The Newport News City Council on Jan. 28 authorized a purchase of a 2.63-acre portion of property at 15446 Warwick Boulevard from St. George's Episcopal Church to support operations and potential growth of the Safe Haven Empowerment Center.
The city manager said St. George's offered the portion of property for sale; the resolution directs the city manager to execute documents necessary to effect the purchase. No members of the public spoke on the item.
Councilman Harris announced he would abstain, stating he is the executive director of an organization that "may realize a benefit because of the transaction" and that a signed written declaration is on file with the city clerk. The council recorded the vote as 5-0 with one abstention.
