The Newport News City Council voted Jan. 14 to hold a closed meeting to discuss potential acquisition of real property in the northern section of the city and later certified the closed meeting record. The council also voted to accept committee, liaison and regional board assignments presented at the council retreat.
A council member moved that, pursuant to the Code of Virginia, the council convene a closed meeting for discussion and consideration of the acquisition of real property for a public purpose where open discussion would adversely affect the city’s bargaining position and negotiating strategy; the motion was seconded and the closed meeting was held. The council later certified by roll call that, to the best of each member’s knowledge, only matters lawfully exempted under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act were discussed and that only matters identified in the motion were considered. The certification motion carried 6–0.
Finally, the council voted to accept the council committees, liaisons and regional boards as presented at the council retreat. That motion was moved and seconded and carried by roll call, 6–0. The mayor directed communications to publish the committee and liaison roster in the city’s communication channel (Newport News Now).
