Council broadens surviving-spouse real-property tax exemption to include soldiers who died in line of duty

The Newport News City Council on Jan. 28 adopted an amendment to Chapter 40 of the city code that broadens a real-property tax exemption for surviving spouses to include spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty, as determined by the U.S. Department of Defense.
The city manager told council the amendment updates local code to reflect recent changes to the Virginia Constitution and state code and explicitly expands eligibility to surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty, in addition to those killed in action.
No members of the public spoke on the measure. The council approved the change by a unanimous roll-call vote, recorded as 6-0. The meeting record does not include ordinance language, implementation dates or estimated fiscal impact.
