Council schedules second reading for parking-fees ordinance to allow third-party payment options

The council completed first reading on an ordinance amending Chapter 41 (fees) to allow the city to pass third-party payment fees through to customers and to integrate additional mobile-payment vendors with the parking software platform (T2 Systems). The ordinance would enable mobile payments at downtown meters and allow the city to accept fees from third parties and possibly work with multiple vendors as technology evolves.
Matt Nelson, Public Parking and Facilities Manager, said the change will allow mobile payments at downtown meters and enable the Steel District enforcement partnership where the city will manage 70 parking spots and retain citation revenue; the ordinance was framed to allow future vendors to integrate with the city's current system.
Public comment urged the city to preserve cash-payment options for people who rely on currency. Nelson said the ordinance does not require removing coin payment and the city intends to maintain cash options where feasible. The council voted 8-0 to set a second reading for Feb. 18.
