Commission discusses formal animal-shelter intake policy, hours and transfer rules

At the Limestone County Commission work session, commissioners discussed drafting a resolution to clarify the animal shelter's intake and adoption policies, including which animals the county will accept and how transfers from other jurisdictions will be handled.

The chairman said animal control is available 24/7 to pick up animals running at large, while the shelter facility itself is open Monday through Saturday. He asked the commission to clarify intake rules because animals previously received from other cities and jurisdictions had contributed to overcrowding.

The chairman also said the county must follow state law when handling animals that have bitten people; such animals cannot be adopted. He asked commissioners to work with the shelter to draft a clear policy that defines when the county will accept owner surrenders, animals transferred from other agencies, and how fees or capacity constraints will be handled.

The commission did not adopt a final resolution at the session; the item was placed for further discussion and staff follow-up. The chairman asked interested commissioners to coordinate with Christy at the animal shelter for drafting language and to return a proposed resolution for future consideration.

Commissioners framed the conversation as an effort to preserve the shelter's adoption success while preventing overcrowding and ensuring public safety.
