Senate issues condolence for former Gov. Bill Richardson, honors East Mountain Rodeo Association

Senator Joseph Cervantes introduced the condolence certificate; the chamber read a lengthy statement summarizing Richardson’s diplomatic and public-service career and extending the Senate’s sympathy to his wife, Barbara Richardson. "How's that for a resume?" Senator Cervantes said after the certificate was read, and numerous senators offered personal recollections of working with the former governor.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and former lieutenant governor Diane Denish were present in the chamber as senators recounted Richardson’s initiatives in renewable energy, the rail runner, education and international diplomacy. Senators described Richardson as a bold and tireless public servant who pursued large projects and engaged with communities across the state.
Later in the session Senator Pat Woods offered a certificate of recognition for the East Mountain Rodeo Association and the Estancia Valley Ranch Rodeo, scheduled for Rodeo de Santa Fe in July 2025. Woods and several senators described working-ranch rodeos as a way to preserve ranching skills and western heritage.
Both certificates were read on the Senate floor; the condolence was carried by Senator Cervantes and the rodeo recognition by Senator Woods. Multiple senators used the floor to deliver personal stories and to thank Barbara Richardson and the rodeo organizers for their service to the state.
