Senate confirms two new regents for New Mexico Highlands University

Gary John Tripp and Elaine Luna were each confirmed after colleagues described long careers in education and community service. Senator Michael Campos moved both confirmations on the Senate floor and led floor debate.
Senator Campos described Tripp’s background as a longtime educator, coach and school-district leader and said Tripp’s master’s and bachelor’s degrees come from Highlands. "He definitely is a strategic planner, and that's what we're looking forward to at New Mexico Highlands University," Campos said at the confirmation debate.
The Senate confirmed Gary John Tripp by recorded vote, 32–0. Senators then considered Elaine Luna. Senators praised Luna’s personal story — arriving at Highlands with limited funds, completing degrees there and later serving in higher-education and community roles — and described her as a candidate with deep ties to the university.
