Education Foundation reports sponsorships, grants and program growth; names Teacher of the Year

Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, representing the Education Foundation, briefed the Lake County School Board on Feb. 24 about recent fundraising, program grants and upcoming recognition events.
Johnson said the foundation raised $42,000 in sponsorships — exceeding a $36,000 goal — and that Lisa Bryant of Lake Minneola High School was named the Lake County Teacher of the Year and will be submitted for state-level consideration. The foundation plans to hold its Night of Stars recognition event on March 4 and will also celebrate school-related employees and induct new alumni into the district’s Hall of Fame.
Johnson reported a grant from the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations to support expansion of allied-health and nursing career and technical education (CTE) programs at Southlake and Leesburg high schools. She said the grant totals $101,250 over three years.
Other Foundation activities noted by Johnson included a rescheduled New Worlds reading event now set for March 25 at Triangle Elementary, a Ladies for Education event planned for April 25, and a sold-out sporting-clays fundraiser on March 7 (35 teams) at Blackjack Sporting Clays in Sumterville. The Foundation’s Apple Mart store in Leesburg recorded 608 visits this year, delivering what Johnson described as $94,402 worth of school supplies to teachers.
Johnson also said the Take Stock in Children scholarship program received 65 student applications this cycle, a 14% increase from the prior period; staff are vetting applications and preparing for interviews.
Johnson closed by inviting board members to the foundation’s upcoming events and directing them to posted registration information on the Foundation’s social media channels.
