Lake County School Board gives final approval to three student-discipline policies

The Lake County School Board voted 5-0 on Feb. 24 to give final approval to three district policies covering removal, suspension, alternative disciplinary placement and expulsion; due process rights; and search and seizure.
The policies — listed on the agenda as 05/2010 (Removal, suspensions, alternative disciplinary placement and expulsion of students), 5611 (Due process rights) and 5,771 (Search and seizure) — were presented during a public hearing that produced no public comment. Attorney Mr. Cole opened and closed the hearing and the superintendent recommended final approval before the board voted.
The board clerk recorded a motion to adopt the policies after the superintendent’s recommendation. Mr. Mathias moved the motion and Mrs. Cunningham seconded it. The vote passed 5-0.
Board members had no additional public debate recorded during the item; the public hearing was opened and closed without speakers. The superintendent told the board she recommended “final approval of the policies as presented.”
The approvals came after the board approved the meeting minutes and the consent agenda earlier in the session; both also passed on unanimous 5-0 voice votes.
