The Worcester Fire Department told the Public Safety Committee on Sept. 9 that it has purchased PFAS‑free turnout gear and is conducting careful wear trials before broader deployment, citing material tradeoffs, vendor variability and human‑performance concerns.
The department said one vendor line of PFAS‑free outer shells became available in late spring and that, at the time of the briefing, the department had 40 sets that do not intentionally contain PFAS and that all outer shells purchased since 2021 do not intentionally contain PFAS. Fire officials said PFAS historically served protective functions in turnout materials and that replacement materials may be less durable, retain heat differently and could allow some toxic contaminants to permeate more quickly; those risks are the reason the department is testing several vendor options and conducting wear trials.
Officials said they will continue to procure PFAS‑free items as they meet NFPA and department performance criteria and will monitor national reports about material performance and manufacturing anomalies. The committee accepted and filed the informational communication.
Why it matters: PFAS chemicals have been linked to cancer in firefighter cohorts and Massachusetts requires gear sold in the state to be PFAS‑free or not intentionally contain PFAS beginning in 2027. The department’s approach balances the health benefits of removing PFAS with operational safety and equipment lifetime considerations.
What’s next: The department will continue comparative wear testing across vendors and return with durability and performance findings to guide replacement decisions.
