Giles County requested $12,475,000 over 30 years at a 2 percent interest rate for renovation, an elevator replacement, a secure‑entry upgrade and improvements at Macy and McLarty Elementary Schools; VDOE staff recommended holding that item to obtain additional information about the county's enrollment projections and whether unspent loan funds would be returned. Pennsylvania County sought $3,549,838 over 18 years at a 2 percent interest rate for four new classrooms at Union Hall Elementary; the board voted to waive first review and approve that loan.
Board members asked whether certain building security items might have been funded from other state safe‑schools grants and asked VDOE to check. For Giles County, members requested more data on why the division anticipates growth that would require up to 11 new classrooms and asked staff to confirm whether unused funds must be returned.
The board voted to approve the Pennsylvania County loan and to hold action on the Giles County request pending the answers to members’ questions.
