Parks staff report progress on playgrounds, turf repairs and spring events

He also said the Dean’s Children’s Park public engagement and a community open house are scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at Island Park Elementary.
Parks Operations Manager Sam Hart summarized recent maintenance efforts after locations on Mercer Island were damaged by European chafer beetle activity. “The crews really have done a great job of…grading things out, added some additional topsoil and grass seed,” Hart said, adding that wildlife continues to unearth treated areas and crews are monitoring and refining turf repairs at Aubrey Davis Park and South Mercer Playfields.
Hart and Daley also outlined routine maintenance and smaller projects: new restroom partitions at Burbank Park, a landscape rehab using biochar on North Mercer Way, yard hydrant installation at the pea patch, pressure washing and restroom painting ahead of the busy season.

Daley highlighted several upcoming events: a spring recycling event at the boat launch on March 29, a mobile Bloodworks Northwest blood drive scheduled for March 10 at 10:30 a.m. (in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce), and a seasonal job fair that drew about 30 candidates over two sessions. He said the department’s second annual senior resource fair the prior Saturday attracted roughly 500 attendees and included more than 55 vendors.
