Cannon County adopts 2024 International Building Code in Resolution 2025-3

The Cannon County Commission voted March 6 to adopt the 2024 editions of the International Building Code and related conservation codes through Resolution 2025-3.
David Robinson, a county staff member present to answer technical questions, told commissioners the adoption updates the county’s codes to the current 7-year cycle and does not itself add new costs. Robinson said, “It does not. It just updates the codes that we administer in force. There's no cost difference or cost to it.”
Commission discussion sought clarity on whether the state already enforces these codes. Robinson and other staff explained that the State of Tennessee requires a residential code and that state inspectors are certified in international codes; adopting the 2024 code keeps county enforcement current and would allow Cannon County to pursue amendments so the county could perform commercial permitting in coordination with towns such as Woodbury.
A motion to approve Resolution 2025-3 was moved and seconded and passed by roll call. The roll call in the transcript records yes votes from Nathan Luna, Nathan Sanders, Karen Ashford, Curtis George, Eddie Myers, Brent Brandon, Randy Gannon, Crystal Alexander and Tony Burnett; Kristen Singleton is recorded as voting no.
County staff said further amendments to zoning and building-code resolutions would be presented to the commission at a later meeting to permit the county to issue commercial permits in more circumstances.
