A student representative for Mounds View High School gave a March 6 report summarizing athletics, music, club and student-council activities across the district.
On athletics the student reported the boys swim and dive season was concluding with many state qualifiers and a second-place finish at section finals; a medley relay and a 200-yard free relay were named among strong relay performances. The student said “the Mustangs beat the Ponies for the first time in 18 years” in a recent meet (score given in the report as 94–91 earlier in the season). Wrestling sent 10 wrestlers to state with seven placing; the student named Brett Swenson as a senior who won his second state title and described Joey Muhlstein as a multiple-time state placer.
In music, the student said chamber and symphony orchestras performed at Bethel Great Hall with about 300 performers, several Mounds View soloists and ensembles were recognized at Best of Sight regionals, and 10–15 students performed at All-State Orchestra at Orchestra Hall. The choir hosted a fundraiser and Symphonic Winds (juniors/seniors) will travel to Italy later in March to perform.
Clubs and service: the robotics First Tech Challenge team “Potential Energy” qualified for state and will compete at nationals in April; a volunteer outreach group packed more than 100 boxes for Feed My Starving Children; Science Olympiad varsity placed first regionally and third at state; and the NHS benefit concert “Music for Mounds View” is scheduled in March at 6 p.m. (transcript did not specify a calendar date). The student also mentioned an upcoming physics fair on the 13th and a student-council leadership seminar April 4–6 at Hibbing High School.
The board thanked the student for the report; student comments about a staff karaoke surprise (equity staff member Mr. Iverson performed) drew lighthearted remarks from board members.
