AMSD rep warns state budget outlook weakens; surplus shrinks, out-year deficit projected

At the March 6 board meeting, the district’s AMSD (Association of Metropolitan School Districts) representative summarized recent developments at the state Capitol, reporting that the February budget forecast reduced the 2026–27 projected surplus from about $1.2 billion to roughly $456 million and warned of a potential $5 billion deficit by 2028 if conditions do not improve.
The representative said the causes included slowing economic growth, inflationary pressures and declining federal funding. He noted Minnesota currently holds roughly $3.7 billion in reserves. He reminded the board that many districts receive about half of their funding from the state, which is why AMSD monitors the Capitol closely and advocates for local control on several issues. AMSD Day at the Capitol is scheduled for March 23, and the representative encouraged board members to participate.
