District projects enrollment rise to 11,228; kindergarten target set at 800

District staff told the Mounds View School Board on March 6 that preliminary budget projections from January estimated 11,128 students for the 2025–26 school year (11,078 resident and 50 nonresident). Since then enrollment has exceeded that projection and the district’s new projected enrollment is 11,228 students.
Staff cautioned that numbers can change before September but said they are trending upward. The district reiterated that nonresident students are admitted on a space-available basis. The district also reported it had worked with former state demographer Hazel Reinhart to set a kindergarten enrollment target of 800 students; declining birth rates were cited as a reason the district is closely monitoring cohort sizes and making space-allocation decisions building by building.
The enrollment update was presented as part of preliminary budget planning; board members noted site-level outreach and recent PTA updates at Turtle Lake but no formal board action accompanied the report.
