Fire Chief Irvin told the board the department recently discovered leaking seals on Engine 1 and that mechanics recommended a third-party dyno test to measure crank-case pressure before committing to seal replacement. If the test shows over-pressurization, the engine could require an in-frame rebuild with an estimated cost of about $26,000; if the test is negative, replacing seals would cost roughly $6,000.
Chief Irvin said the department is preparing for either outcome and will schedule the dyno test. He also reported the department rehired a certified firefighter whose first day coincided with the meeting and that three part-time personnel failed the department’s respirator fit test; those positions will be replaced by new hires.
No council action was required; the chief said the expense for seal replacement is within the department budget should the dyno test indicate that course of repair.
