Pasadena ISD names Dr. Tony Lopez lone finalist for superintendent

The Pasadena Independent School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday named Dr. Tony Lopez the lone finalist to succeed retiring Superintendent Dr. Dean Powell, setting a 21-day waiting period before the board may vote to hire her.
Board Member Kenny Fernandez moved to name Dr. Lopez as the lone finalist; Board Member Nilda Sullivan seconded the motion. The board described a multi-month search run by Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services that included staff and community input and a community survey.
Board President Casey Phelan summarized Dr. Lopez’s district experience, saying Lopez began teaching at Beverly Hills Intermediate in 1996, later served as assistant principal and was named principal of Thompson Intermediate in 2009. The board record states Thompson Intermediate received an “excellence in urban schools” distinction during her tenure, and that she has served in district leadership roles including executive director of curriculum and instruction, associate superintendent of human resources, and deputy superintendent of staff and academic achievement. The board also said that during her three-year tenure as deputy superintendent the district’s six high schools were listed among U.S. News & World Report’s “Best High Schools” and that college, career and military readiness increased by 16 percent.
After Phelan’s remarks trustees individually affirmed their support; the chair announced the motion carried. The board asked Dr. Lopez to stand for recognition and acknowledged family members in attendance. Under the procedure announced in the meeting record, the board will wait 21 days before taking a final hiring vote.
