Residents, parents press Sudbury Select Board to pursue membership in vocational high school districts

Several Sudbury residents used the Jan. 14 Select Board meeting public-comment period to urge the town to press for renewed access to regional vocational-technical high schools.

Ashley Rekodakis, speaking as the parent of a student who expects to pursue a vocational pathway, described being surprised to learn Sudbury is out of district for nearby vocational schools and urged the town to seek membership: “I think weare doing these kiddos a disservice by kind of discouraging them innately from that,” she said. Kay Bell, a Sudbury resident, told the board vocational-technical programs offer diverse career pathways—automotive, health, biotech, culinary and more—and urged the town to craft a strong warrant article demonstrating Sudbury’s commitment and readiness to seek membership.

Board members discussed a nonbinding warrant article drafted by the Energy and Sustainability Committee (sic: the draft was prepared by town staff for the vocational discussion) that would ask Town Meeting to express support for pursuing membership in a vocational-technical district. Select Board Member Lisa Kuchasian and others said placing a nonbinding article on the warrant would demonstrate community will to regional districts and could help when Sudbury pursues membership. Some members asked whether the article would actually influence a district’s decision and whether Town Meeting needed additional detail about costs, timing and district capacity.

Radha Gargea, chair of the Sudbury 250 committee, joined the hearing to say the committee had prepared initial cost estimates for a 250th-anniversary celebration and planned fundraising; she did not present a figure for any vocational-related funding but said the committee would discuss its request at an imminent meeting. (This item was heard earlier in the meeting during a separate agenda item but participants referenced funding timelines during the broader town-meeting-article discussion.)

Select Board Chair Jen believed the board should put a nonbinding article on the warrant and then direct the town manager and board members to contact nearby vocational districts to ask whether Town Meeting support would assist Sudburyin being admitted if a seat became available. Vice Chair Dan Cartier said he wanted a clearer sense of whether the article would lead to concrete action and said he wanted staff to report back with district feedback before the board took a final position. Several board members said the warrant article could be pulled later if more information showed the article would not help.

What’s next: The board agreed to place a nonbinding vocational-access article on the warrant for now, and directed the town manager and select board representatives to contact regional vocational districts and report back to the board with district responses and any cost or timing information they can provide ahead of the next meeting.
