The Sudbury Select Board voted on Feb. 25 to begin the process to fill a vacancy on the Sudbury School Committee under the applicable Massachusetts general law. The board’s motion directs staff to post the vacancy and to schedule a joint meeting with the School Committee to consider applicants and make an appointment.
Select Board member Charlie Russo, who made the motion, said appointing now would avoid tie votes and provide continuity on the school committee. Board members discussed timing and the desire not to be seen as influencing an election; the board agreed the position should be posted for the required notice period and the Select Board and School Committee will coordinate a joint meeting when possible. The board recorded a unanimous vote to initiate the process.
The town manager and staff were asked to publicize the posting quickly and to propose joint meeting dates for the Select Board and the School Committee so the appointment process can proceed in time before the town election and town meeting.
