The Sudbury Select Board on Feb. 25 authorized the town manager to sign a lease and power‑purchase agreement (PPA) with Solect Energy for rooftop solar at the Fairbank Community Center, approved a contract to replace the Atkinson roof and voted to accept a $100,000 state reimbursement to offset fencing and lighting costs for Fairbank’s multipurpose court.
The PPA for Fairbank follows the same structure as the town’s recent DPW rooftop solar agreement and will send generated energy to the grid for netting back to the building; the town will buy electricity at a reduced rate rather than directly self‑consuming all the output. Sandra Duran, town staff who is coordinating the project, told the board the array should generate about "77% of the building's use." Duran said installation work would begin with mobilization in spring, with roof‑work on the Atkinson pool roof scheduled for August; full interconnection with Eversource and power generation are forecast to occur in the fall and remain dependent on Eversource timing.
The board also approved a $281,800 contract with Titan Roofing Inc. to replace the Atkinson roof system. Town Manager Andy Sheehan and several board members said the roof is currently leaking and that replacing it is necessary to protect the structure, regardless of final decisions about pool operations. Select Board member Lisa (last name on record: Lisa) said delaying the roof would risk further damage, and the board voted to proceed.
Finally, the board voted to accept a $100,000 state reimbursement grant provided through Representative Carmen Gentile for fencing and lighting at the existing Fairbank multi‑sport court. Sandra Duran said the funds reimburse costs already paid by the Fairbank project account; according to the project reconciliation she cited, about $93,831.18 of the original $100,000 had been spent and the grant will be applied to the Fairbank Community Center account.
The board recorded unanimous roll‑call approvals on the PPA authorization, the roof contract and the grant acceptance.
Board members said the actions keep the larger Fairbank project moving forward while staff continues to evaluate long‑term questions about the pool’s operation and other uses of the Atkinson space.
Several board members said they expect further discussion about the pool and Fairbank project as part of upcoming town meeting and capital planning work.
