Board to approve $4 million transfer from education fund to cover operations costs

At the meeting, the administration asked the South Madison Community School Corporation Board of Trustees to approve routine intra‑fund transfers and a planned transfer of $4 million from the education fund to the operations fund to cover operational costs the property‑tax‑supported operations fund does not cover.

Business official Mr. McCarty explained the transfers are part of the annual close‑out and budgeting process. He told the board the state consolidated several account categories into three primary accounts — education, operations and debt service — and that the district budgets a transfer from education to operations because property tax revenue for operations does not fully cover items such as utilities. The board was asked to approve a resolution authorizing the transfers; McCarty said the $4 million transfer was included in the budget approved last year and would likely be processed as roughly $2 million in June and $2 million in December.

Board members asked no substantive questions during the motion. The board approved the resolution by roll call.

Why it matters: the transfer moves locally budgeted education dollars into the operations account to pay for non‑instructional costs. The administration characterized the move as part of routine annual budgeting and said the district has followed this practice since the state changed account formats.
