New Kent school board adopts norms and protocols, adds strategic plan to action items; visitor and violations language sent for further drafting

The New Kent County School Board approved a package of board norms and protocols and voted to add the district strategic plan as an action item with a technical amendment assigning departments to each stated goal, the board decided during a work session that stretched over several hours.

The board’s action included a wording change to the opening principle: Board member Theresa Cooney (first reference on the record) proposed and read a replacement sentence that the board accepted, saying the board should “prioritize the academic success and overall well‑being of all students in New Kent County Public Schools, ensuring decisions are guided by their educational needs and future opportunities.” Cooney asked that “academic achievement comes first” be explicit in the document; the board agreed to substitute her text.
