Commission establishes Fremont County semiquincentennial committee, approves proclamation

The Fremont County Commission voted to create a county semiqucentennial committee and approved a proclamation directing the county to organize local commemorations of the United States’ 250th anniversary.

A commissioner introduced the proclamation noting the state has set up some funds for semiqucentennial celebrations and that counties could apply for related grants. The proclamation as passed declares March 4 as the county’s proclamation day and establishes a committee to plan and coordinate local events, educational programs and commemorative activities.

Commissioners discussed whether only one county application can receive state grant funds and whether tribes could apply independently. One commissioner asked whether forming the county committee would preclude tribes from applying for their own funding; staff said they would clarify that point with the state and obtain a legal opinion. The county attorney had not yet reviewed the proclamation language at the time of the vote; commissioners instructed staff to seek legal clarification about grant eligibility and application mechanics.

The commission’s approval establishes the committee and authorizes staff to proceed with committee formation and to pursue available state funds for local commemorations. Commissioners emphasized they will clarify grant rules and tribal eligibility before attempting to apply for any state-administered semiqucentennial funding.
