The Marblehead School Committee voted 3-0 to name Marblehead High School’s athletic facility the Alexander W. Kulovich Junior Athletic Complex.
The motion to name the complex was made during the committee’s meeting; Jen Schaffner seconded the motion. Committee members Brian Oda, Jen Schaffner and Sarah Fox voted in favor, and the motion carried 3-0. School officials said they will coordinate with the honoree’s family on an unveiling and press plans once the lettering is installed.
Committee members and people who submitted written tributes described a decades‑long career in the district and noted Mr. Kulovich’s work with student‑athletes, coaches and families. “You were the athletic director,” one committee member said, and dozens of emails and phone calls from former students, colleagues and family members arrived in the days before the vote.
Alexander W. Kulovich accepted the honor and spoke briefly, thanking colleagues, coaches and family and saying participation in school activities improved students’ academic work and life outcomes. Family members on the call described his long record of volunteer work and called the recognition “very humbling.”
Committee members said the naming followed extensive public comment and private messages from across the country; they also mentioned logistics for a public unveiling and coordination with press once the sign is ready. Allison Taylor, a committee member who could not attend, had asked to be recorded as supportive and was represented in the roll call.
The committee’s action was limited to the naming; no additional budget appropriation or construction decision was recorded in the motion.
