Ben Gomes, the city’s fire marshal, told the Hopewell City Council that a March 7, 2024, structure fire on the 1000 block of Bank Street exposed access problems for fire apparatus and prompted a staff review of parking and fire-lane needs.
Gomes said Bank Street’s curb-to-curb width is about 25.5 feet and that the city’s ladder truck is roughly 9 feet wide with outriggers; typical clearances on the block with parked cars measured 10 to 17 feet and do not reliably leave the space the department needs. “We are unable to park a fire truck in front of … the townhomes that are on Bank Street,” Gomes said.
