Council unanimously approved a resolution directing staff to research potential zoning ordinance amendments and performance standards for automotive-related uses citywide.
Vice Mayor Joyner, who made the initiating request, told council she was concerned about a proliferation of repair and vehicle-sales operations in areas such as City Point Road and in residential neighborhoods where residents are repairing and storing vehicles on public streets.
City planning staff said state code (Va. Code §15.2-2286) allows the planning commission or council to initiate ordinance amendments and that the resolution simply authorizes staff to study the uses, identify performance standards and return with options. The resolution was presented as an initial, research-phase action rather than an immediate ordinance change.
Vice Mayor Joyner moved the resolution and Councilor Jay seconded. The council approved the measure 7-0. Staff said any ordinance changes would later return to council with public hearings and opportunities for neighborhood input.
