City staff previews draft strategic economic development plan ahead of Feb. 6 summit

The city’s economic development director presented an updated draft strategic economic development plan and asked council members to review the 14-page document in advance of an economic development summit on Feb. 6 at the John Randolph Foundation.
The director said the work follows a June 2024 council charge to update the plan last revised in February 2014 and that the document focuses on three priorities identified during a 2024 council retreat: strengthening financial infrastructure, advancing economic stability and growth, and developing an integrated public safety approach.
"What would really, really be fantastic is before this economic development summit on February 6, that this body would take the time to go through this strategic plan and let me know ... if there's anything in this plan that they disagree with," the director said.
Staff described recent commercial and residential market activity—properties going under contract and agents reporting multiple offers—but council did not take action. The director said he will return in regular session (around mid-February) to request council action if needed.
Council members had no questions during the presentation; staff said they would return for a future vote if council requests it.
