Largo proclaims February 2025 Black History Month, honors Wanda McCaughton

Mayor Woody Brown and the Largo City Commission proclaimed February 2025 as Black History Month and recognized Wanda McCaughton as the city’s 2025 honoree for community service in the Ridgecrest area.
The proclamation notes the contributions of Black and African American community members to Largo, Tampa Bay and the nation and highlights area programming and partnerships for the month. The city outreach team described library displays, a pair of quilt-block workshops (Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.), and performing-arts programming including Cirque Zumazumma on Feb. 16 at the Central Park Performing Arts Center. A local exhibit presented by Creative Pinellas and the Woodson African American Museum of Florida opens Feb. 20 and runs through May.
The commission read the proclamation into the record and introduced Wanda McCaughton, president of the Friends of Ridgecrest nonprofit and neighborhood-watch group. “Where he has me to serve, I will serve,” McCaughton said after accepting the recognition, adding that the honor belongs to her community and the volunteers who support neighborhood projects, voter registration drives, pandemic health-service outreach and Habitat for Humanity efforts.
The proclamation encourages city residents to join Black History Month events and honors McCaughton’s decades of local volunteerism, including senior events, Martin Luther King Jr. Day programming and Juneteenth recognition.
