The Southwest ISD Board of Trustees approved two amendments to the 2024–25 compensation plan intended to help recruitment and staffing planning.
District staff said the current practice paid tutors a flat rate that staff described as low; the amended plan creates tiered hourly rates for instructional-day tutors: $25 per hour for certified teachers, $18 per hour for degree-holding tutors, and a minimum of $15 per hour for non-degree tutors. The board amended the proposed rates on the floor to ensure no hourly pay fell below $15.
The district also approved an early-notice incentive: employees who notify the district by Feb. 14 that they will not return for the next school year would receive $500 to help accelerate hiring timelines; employees who notify between Feb. 15 and March 7 would receive $300. Staff said the intent is to improve recruitment timing as districts compete for candidates.
After a brief discussion and a motion with an amendment reflecting the $15/$18 floor, trustees approved both changes by voice vote.
