On Jan. 21 the Weston City Commission approved on first reading an ordinance to amend city code section 2.17, changing procedures for requests for relief from specified laws so that medical- and disability-related claims are reviewed administratively by the city manager rather than in full public commission hearings.
City Attorney (referred to in the meeting as Mr. Cole) explained the change was prompted by sensitivity around medical and disability information presented in public settings. Under the proposed amendment, non-medical or non-disability requests would continue to be processed through the current public- hearing path; medical- and disability-related requests would be submitted to the city manager, reviewed administratively, and would still trigger mailed notice to property owners within 500 feet if specific property is affected. An applicant could appeal a city-manager administrative decision to the commission.
Commissioners had no substantive objections. The item passed on a 5-0 vote at first reading. Moved by Commissioner Fabio Andrade, seconded by Commissioner Byron Jaffe.
Why it matters: the ordinance aims to protect applicants's private medical information by allowing confidential administrative review while preserving public-notice and appeal rights for affected properties.
