The House Education Committee voted to approve SB 167, a measure that moves the deadline for school choice enrollment from May 1 to June 1. The sponsor explained the change aims to accommodate differing school calendars and give administrators additional time to complete administrative tasks before families finalize choices.
"SB 167 is a very simple bill... This is simply moving that date from May 1 to June 1," the sponsor said, noting the change had been discussed with administrators and the Arkansas Education Association. Representative Gonzalez Worthen asked why June 1 was chosen; the sponsor replied that the later date better allows districts to reach the end of their school years before enrollment cutoffs.
Committee discussion was limited and no members of the public registered to testify. The committee adopted a house-side amendment adding a house sponsor and then voted to pass the bill.
Committee record shows unanimous or voice approval in committee; the transcript records adoption of an amendment before passage.
