A Honolulu City Council committee on Thursday amended and reported out Resolution 25-505 to confirm Nancy Cassandra to the Commission on Culture and the Arts as the urban design representative, with a term expiring June 30, 2029.
The committee on innovation, technology and entertainment amended the nomination to include the posted CD1 and recommended the measure be reported out for adoption, with no objections recorded during the committee proceeding. There was no public testimony on the item.
Nancy Cassandra, a landscape architect who said she has lived and worked on Oahu since 1995, described her professional experience in streetscapes, parks and resort environments and said she looks forward to serving on the commission. "Aloha. Thank you for this opportunity ... I'm a landscape architect. I've been living and working on Oahu for, 1995," Cassandra said to the committee.
Council member Tupala asked clarifying questions about Cassandra's role in projects and the name of her firm; Cassandra identified her firm as Umemoto Cassandra Design and said she and her husband operate the business in Kailua. Chair Tommy Waters praised Cassandra's work with students at the University of Hawaii and said her appointment could help develop future local talent.
The committee's action amends Resolution 25-505 to CD1 (OCS 2025-018/2-28-2025 9:22 AM) and reports the nomination out for adoption by the full council. The full council will consider the confirmation at a subsequent meeting.
